Anderson coined this term to describe how nationalism functions culturally, but it’s now applied to a lot of different kinds of community. This concept comes in handy when asking questions like “how do we come to believe that we belong in the same community as people we do not know, or even people who we personally do not even like?” In such a situation, we could say that we belong to an “imagined community”, and that this is produced through practices and technologies such as print media, social media, perhaps protest movements, use of a shared language or dialect, and many many more.
